About Zeugma

Our Name

What's in a Name?

We are often asked about our name, which by the way is pronounced "zoogma". In case you are interested, here it is:

The ancient city of Zeugma was founded in 300 B.C. by Seleukos, one of Alexander the Great's generals, on the banks of the Euphrates River in Mesopotamia. In 64 B.C. Zeugma was conquered and ruled by the Roman Empire and the name Zeugma became synonymous with "bridge", because of its bridge across the river and also because of its vital link between east and west along the Silk Road. In addition, a wall was built around the city which became a thriving hub of commerce and a wealth generator for those within.

The metaphor was striking: moving valuable traffic, facilitating communications and generating wealth for its customers is what we are about.
